I posted a video on my Facebook page about the upcoming publication of Morpheus Road: The Black. Basically it’s about how I think it would be a good idea to go back and re-read The Light before venturing into The Black because so much of what happens in The Black is a reflection of events that unfolded in The Light. That’s not to say that you would be totally lost in The Black (so to speak) if you’d forgotten everything that happened in The Light. Anybody who has read my Pendragon series knows that I will pepper in details of things that happened previously in the story to make sure that the uninitiated aren’t totally lost. But also like Pendragon, each book of the Morpheus Road trilogy is really the next chapter in the big, overall story…and it all ties together.

So if you haven’t read The Light, or have totally forgotten about Marshall and Gravedigger and Cooper and Sydney and…and…and… I suggest that you give it a quick re-read. If you haven’t read The Light at all…seriously? Just kidding. Maybe give it a shot before venturing further along the Morpheus Road into The Black.

Many of you may remember that we went back and forth about what the cover of “The Light” should be. There were two different designs that we liked and we ultimately went with the “Gravedigger” cover. But the other cover was also really good too, so the thinking was: Why not use both? Meaning: we’d use the other design for when the paperback of “The Light” came out. So the design guys did a little bit of work on the other concept and when the paperback of “The Light” comes out it will look, more or less, like the other design.

However…the design for the paperback looked so good, that when it came time to design the cover for The Black, the same issue came up. Do we use the same style as the hardcover? Or go with the second design? After a lot more back and forth, we decided to go with the second design this time.

So…that’s a long way of saying that when you see the cover for “The Black”, it will be very different than the cover of “The Light.” (But it will look a lot like the paperback cover of “The Light”…which won’t be published for a while.)

Make sense? Probably not. But the main thing is, the cover for “The Black” is really cool, and I hope you like it.

Okay, here goes.

If you’ve read “The Light”, then you can pretty much figure out what the title of the second book in the trilogy is going to be. We learned that the place where Marsh (and the rest of us) live is referred to as: “The Light”. In trying to get Marsh to find the poleax, Damon says that it’s in the Light, but the answer to where it is can be found is somewhere else and he threatens to send Marshall there. So the next stop along the Morpheus Road is the title of the second book:

Morpheus Road: The Black.

Many of you figured that out, though most thought it would be called “The Dark”. So the titles aren’t descriptions, they’re references to actual places. Which raises the question: What will the title of #3 be? I won’t discuss that until The Black comes out next year. But I will say this: As with “The Light”, once you’ve read “The Black” you’ll pretty much know what that title is going to be.

Now that The Light has been out for a month, I figured it was okay to start a topic to discuss it.

For those who have read my Pendragon books, you know that I write stories that don’t always go where you think they’re going. Morpheus Road is no different. At the end of “The Light” there are some very big twists and story shifts . . . not the least of which is the reveal of what Gravedigger is all about. Or not about. Who thinks they know where the story is now headed?

We all have irrational fears, not to mention rational ones. Me? I don’t do well with snakes, but they pretty much fall into the rational variety. Anything that can sneak up on you and deliver a lethal bite is worthy of my terror.

Of the irrational sort, I am afraid of clowns. In a big way. I’m a classic Bozo-phobe. I can even trace it back to an incident when I was about two years old and was taken to see a movie in a theater for the very first time. It was a matinee, back in the day when parents would drop kids off for the afternoon, unsupervised. Basically, it was anarchy. In between the Huey, Dewey and Louie cartoon and The Shaggy Dog, a special live appearance was made by Clarabell the clown. For those who don’t know, Clarabell was Howdy Doody’s sidekick. He didn’t speak (a particularly strange affectation embraced by some clowns) and only communicated through the honking of various horns. So this creep comes charging down the aisle, the kids go ballistic, and my brain exploded.

So it may be an irrational fear, but at least I have an excuse.

What irrational fears do you have?
