Favorite Pendragon Book

While visiting so many schools and bookstores, many of the same questions pop up.  One of them is about what my favorite Pendragon book is.  Since it’s been asked so many times, I thought I’d answer that here.

Looking at it one way, I don’t have a favorite because they all seem like different chapters in one big story.  But I can come up with a few that stand out for different reasons.  The book that was the most fun to write was “The Never War” because I loved going back into real history and doing the research about a time and place that fascinate me.   The book that was the most difficult to write was  “The Quillan Games”.  Coming up with all of those wild games, creating the rules, and then having Bobby play them was grueling.  I certainly don’t have a LEAST favorite book, though I can say that my least favorite cover was the one I call:  “Bobby the Blue-Eyed Reindeer”.   Yeesh.

But favorite book?  Now that they’re all complete and I can look back on the whole story, I guess maybe there is one that stands out.  I think I like it because it had a little bit of all the books in it and it tied up the whole story in a way that I had always planned on, but was never sure that it would actually work.  The fact that it did work is very satisfying.  There were a few scenes in that book (I won’t mention them here because I don’t want to write spoilers) that actually get me choked up.  More than a few scenes.  It was an incredibly rewarding experience to tie together all the loose ends, answer all the questions, and complete an epic story.  So under pressure, I would have to say that my favorite Pendragon book is The Soldiers of Halla.

    Mine would have to be Raven Rise. I love pg. 374 (I think that’s the page) where Loor and Bobby kissed. I giggled, then said, “Back off, Loor. He’s mine.” which made me giggle more. And, next thing you knew, I was rolling on the ground, having a full-out laugh attack. *wipes tear from eye* Good times, good times.

  2. 6969 says:

    I also really like the The Quillan games. Raven Rise is also pretty good. I’m gonna buy Soldirs of Halla pretty soon, so I can finally finish the sereis(let alone the prequels.)

  3. Sam says:

    I really like the quillian games because its so creative. and usually in most books there is a traitor so i thought you were going to put a traitor in book 9 but you did it a little earlier then i thought when you wrote that Nevva was the traitor. if i was a traveler i will probobly betray bobby because i like power

  4. 6969 says:

    Oh, and Mr. MacHale, after you are done with the Morpheus Road trilogy, can you start a sereis of Uncle Press’s experiences when he was starting to become a Traveler. Maybe he would see the Territories in a different order or something, and how did he find out about Traveling?

  5. Lost says:

    Fave book better than lost

  6. David says:

    My fave is zadda and denduron coral and raven rise

  7. 6969 says:

    It’s… Cloral, not coral

  8. Tom Dorney 8 my homework says:

    I read 15 Pendragon Books:
    10 books in the series,
    3 prequels,
    1 companion (The Guide to the Territories of Halla)
    1 graphic novel.

    Favorite? Prequel #2, the one with Aja Killian, Eli Winter, and Alder.

    …you haven’t read book 10, have you. Though, he still sent journals to Tom Dorney, (p.s. please stop eating my homework) so you can have a book where Tom is reading the journals. Like with Pendragon, Dorney could be sometimes on Second Earth, Sometimes reading the journals. For those who read Book 10, do you think that the journals that Tom got contained fake stories?

  10. Tom Dorney 8 my homework says:

    Can you make a Guide to the Territories of Halla Vol. 2, concerning the territories Zadaa, Quillan, Ibara, Second Earth (with Ravinia), and Third Earth (post-apocalyptic style, with Ravinia and Dados)? I hate it that you stopped with Eelong on quote-unquote volume one.

  11. 6969 says:

    @Tom Dorney 8 my homework

    Yeah, I haven’t read book 10, but i’m about to. I didn’t know that part about “Tom Dorney” whoever he is. Still, who knows what D.J. will do after Morpheus Road?

  12. Tom Dorney 8 my homework says:

    @6969

    You don’t know who Tom Dorney is?! What book are you on?!!?

    >:O

  13. Tom Dorney 8 my homework says:

  19. Lead Traveler says:

    I can probably say that Raven Rise is my favorite, with The Soldiers of Halla in a close second.

  20. Klees rule says:

    hey dj why does everyone except courtney and mark call bobby by his last name? and my favorite so far is the nonstop action of black water which the cover of black water is my wallpaper.

  21. spinney says:

    That would be awesome wallpaper O.o
    It would be so awesome if D.J. wrote a book of Press’s journals and he and Tom’s adventures starting with Saint Dane getting restless!
    I’m on book two
    for the second time xD
    I own one and two and I’m planning on eventually owning them all by buying them one at a time (don’t have enough money to buy them all at once)

  22. Lead Traveler says:

    @spinney
    i have the same trouble!!!! i have to buy them by myself(stupid parents) and i’ve only got 1-6 (i’ve been trying to get them all for about two years). and i really want the 7th book but i don’t have enough money and once i do get enough money my parents basically force me to buy something else cause we hardly ever go to the bookstore!!!!!!!!!

  23. yo yo wassup says:

    Visit my website! It’s http://www.pendragonrpg.webs.com. It’s fun! BTW, my favorite pendragon books are #s 5, 7, 9, and 10. (Black Water, The Quillan Games, Raven Rise, and The Soldiers of Halla) Mr. MacHale, how did you come up with the names of the books?

  24. yo yo wassup says:

    btw, anybody who does visit my website (www.pendragonrpg.webs.com) please tell me if u did and tell me what you think about it.

  25. Emily Stern says:

    My favorite book would have to be either The Never War or The Reality Bug. I loved the history aspect in the Never War and how it kind of coincides with the roaring 1920s. It’s always been a cool part of history that I love researching about. Plus, I never knew about the Hindenburg disaster until I read the book (Where have I been? Living under a rock?).

    And I just think that the Reality Bug shows that technology can be a bad thing, despite the good parts that you try to achieve from it. It can go too far and that’s why people suffer on Veelox. Technology took over and thus, the territory crumbled.

  26. Lead Traveler says:

    how many 12 year old kids own a cell phone at my school? (and this is going on to what Emily Stern said about technology) idk how many. a lot. about probably 3/4 of the kids. i’m one of the people in the 1/4 you don’t have a cell phone and i don’t want one. call me crazy but i don’t want one and i already am crazy.

  27. Gunny says:

    Who is Everyones fav character?

    Mine is Gunny

  28. kirby says:

    6969 if you have read book 10 youd know press did not fight saint dane i know this and im 10 years old.

    p.s. instead he should make another before the war book about bobby nevva and naymeer.

  29. Lead Traveler says:

    my fav. character has to be………….um………………i’m not sure.. i guess if i HAD to pick it would be…………….um……………………..um………….jeez…this is hard…………….IDK!!!!!!!!!!! um…………….i’m going to choose a random one the first one that pops into my head………KASHA!!!!!!!!!!! she’s a cat/warrior and i like cats!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Reed says:

    SPADER!!!! SPADER!!!!!! HOBEY-HO MATES!!!!

  31. Reed says:

    THAT MEANS I LOVE CLORAL!!!!! BUT I ALSO LOVE DENDURON!!!!!!

  32. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

    MY FAV. ONE HAS TO BE………….. HOLD ON I HAVE TO THINK HERE. UM…IT HAS TO BE… WELL MY FAV. TERRITORY IS CLORAL CAUSE I LOVE THE WATER AND BECAUSE OF THE SNIGGERS… MY FAV. PERSON HAS TO BE………WELL, MAYBE SPADER CAUSE HE’S FUNNY AND GETS TO SPEND TIME IN THE WATER….MAYBE KASHA BECAUSE SHE’S A CAT WARRIOR AND I LIKE CATS A LOT….MAYBE ALDER BECAUSE HE’S A KNIGHT, BUT HE’S ALSO KIND OF GENTLE…MAYBE GUNNY BECAUSE HE’S OLD BUT HE’S STILL A TRAVELER AND HE IS FUNNY… HEY THAT RHYMED….MAYBE SIRY…BECAUSE HE’S A LEADER AND HE’S FUNNY… MAYBE MARK BECAUSE HE SEEMS COOL AND HE’S SMART… MAYBE COURTNEY BECAUSE SHE’S ATHLETIC AS WELL AS FUNNY…MAYBE BOBBY CAUSE HE’S THE MAIN CHARACTER AND I FEEL LIKE I KNOW HIM THE BEST…. MAYBE-CURSE ME FOR SAYING THIS- SAINT DANE CAUSE HE’S PRETTY COOL AND I LIKE HOW HE’S HAIR CATCHES ON FIRE AND HE’S GOT A MASTER MIND… MAYBE NEVVA BECAUSE EVENTUALLY SHE TURNS OUT PRETTY CLOSE FOR THE BETTER. IDK. IT’S TOO HARD.

  33. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

  34. second traveler says:

    It would be um…………… i agree with you lead traveler its hard i guess it would be not kasha mabey alder idk? ok this is it Second earth bobby and chococococococ

  35. First Eath Traveler says:

    I haven’t read all of the books yet but i am finishing the 5th right now. Out of the five i have read, i would have to say My favorite BP book if The Never War. YAY GUNNY! Spader was really annoying me in that book, how he wasn’t listening to Bobby or Gunny. In The Lost City of Faar, i cried when Press died. It KILLED me! I really need to finish the rest of the series to judge all whoppin’ 10 books.

  36. First Eath Traveler says:

    I am with The Lead Traveler on the cell phone argument. I don’t own one and i dont want one BD

  37. First Eath Traveler says:

    If i had to pick a Character. . .i would say. . .Gunny, because i haven’t gotten all that far into the 5th book yet, so i don’t know any poeple in that book besides Boon, and he’s just plain AWESOME! i used to really like Spader, but his emotions always got the better of him, and he broke the promise to BP. He said that he wouldn’t let his emotions get the better of him and that he would always listen to BP. But when the Hindenburg incident was about to happen, see The Never War, all he cared about was saving the thirty-nine people in the blimp; he wouldn’t even listen to BP when he said that if the Hindenburg went down, Saint Dane would win. GO GUNNY!

  38. First Eath Traveler says:

    OMG I just found out, by watching a video on how to pronounce all the names and words correctly for the books, tht Raven Rise takes place on Second Earth! Sweet, I bet Mark is happy about that.

  39. second traveler says:

    @ first eath traveler I know you ment to spell earth but eath thats just wrong

  40. First Earth Traveler says:

    wow, thanks for the catch. lol man do i feel stupid.

  41. First Earth Traveler says:

    I am almost done with Black water now, and i really like it! Kasha got on my nerves in the beginning though, but i really like Boon. Gotta figure out what happens when the klee’s use gigs

  42. First Earth Traveler says:

    FINISHED!!! And man, am I totally upset about the Flume. Poor Gunny! Poor Spader! But mostly, poor Gunny! Ii can’t believe it, Kasha, Gunny, and Spader, all in one book. Pretty upsetting. Oh well, I got worse matters to attend to; like tryin’ to figure out how in the world I am supposed to get all 10 books on my bookshelf along with the 3 Books of the Travelers, and the guide to all the territories of Halla. I need some serious cash!

  43. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

    i do too!!!!!!!!!!! i’ve only got 1-6 and i NEED 7-10 and MR and the 3 prequels!!!!! i need mulah too!!!!!

  44. First Earth Traveler says:

    Totally! I don’t own a single copy for myself, and my school library wont let us check out squat these last two weeks! I agree with you on the MR part, i want to read that series too; looks hecka good! So on my shopping list is all ten major BP books, the three prequels, the guide to the territories of Halla, and MR.

  45. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

    i need 7-10, MR, 3 prequels and that’s jest for dj’s books. i still need a lot of the warriors series, hunger games, im waiting for the 4th Eragon, the 2ond book of Skeleton Creek, the last Shadow Children, 2-5 Leven Thumps, 5-6 Artemis Fowl, 3-5 Gregor the Overlander, the Farsalan Trilogy, Brandon Mull said he was coming out with a second Candy Shop War so im waiting for that, the books in the Magyk series starting with Flyte, i don’t know how many there are, and im waiting for the 2ond series of Percy Jackson, and probably a bunch more, i just can’t think of the rest. i need big bucks.

  46. Lightningstreak says:

    Haha, I’m currently reading The Quillan Games (don’t worry, I read the summaries on Wikipedia. I love spoiling stuff for myself), and I think it’s my favorite. I also liked The Never War and The Lost City of Faar — and Cloral is definitely my favorite territory.

    Also, caps. They hurt eyes.

    @Cheese: Ack, I need moneys too. 7th Artemis Fowl, 4th Eragon (though my dad will probably get it for both of us, he’s a fan too), second Candy Shop War (WHAT IS THIS), second Percy Jackson series, second Red Pyramid book (whenever that comes out), and a whole slew of others that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Bleh.

  47. First Earth Traveler says:

    @I see the cheese
    Leven Thumps is awesome! And there are five Magyk books; Magyk,of course, Flyte, Physik, Queste, and Syren.

  48. First Earth Traveler says:

    Question: There is a second Percy Jackson book that isn’t the red pyramid, or not?

  49. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

    @First Earth Travler
    rick riordan is coming out with a second series for Percy Jackson and it is not the red pyramid. that is totally different.
    @LightningStreak
    there is a 7th Artemis Fowl book. i only know that there is the 5th one that has something to do with demons and the 6th one which is the time paradox. but what is the 7th book?

  50. I SEE THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!! says:

    oh! i also need inkdeath.
