Favorite Pendragon Book

While visiting so many schools and bookstores, many of the same questions pop up.  One of them is about what my favorite Pendragon book is.  Since it’s been asked so many times, I thought I’d answer that here.

Looking at it one way, I don’t have a favorite because they all seem like different chapters in one big story.  But I can come up with a few that stand out for different reasons.  The book that was the most fun to write was “The Never War” because I loved going back into real history and doing the research about a time and place that fascinate me.   The book that was the most difficult to write was  “The Quillan Games”.  Coming up with all of those wild games, creating the rules, and then having Bobby play them was grueling.  I certainly don’t have a LEAST favorite book, though I can say that my least favorite cover was the one I call:  “Bobby the Blue-Eyed Reindeer”.   Yeesh.

But favorite book?  Now that they’re all complete and I can look back on the whole story, I guess maybe there is one that stands out.  I think I like it because it had a little bit of all the books in it and it tied up the whole story in a way that I had always planned on, but was never sure that it would actually work.  The fact that it did work is very satisfying.  There were a few scenes in that book (I won’t mention them here because I don’t want to write spoilers) that actually get me choked up.  More than a few scenes.  It was an incredibly rewarding experience to tie together all the loose ends, answer all the questions, and complete an epic story.  So under pressure, I would have to say that my favorite Pendragon book is The Soldiers of Halla.

My favorite book is PROBABLY the Quillan Games. I don’t know how, it just sort of hypnotized me. I couldn’t stop reading and was done in, like, a day.
I’m on the 10th book now–The Soldiers of Halla–and I have to say, it’s pretty good, but I just don’t want the series to end.

  3. Cloral says:

I love every single one of the books and I’m sad that there’s no more. I’d have to say my favorite book is The Lost City of Faar because it takes place on my favorite territory with my favorite Traveler.

  15. Pendragon Geek says:

DJ, why does the book series have to end?

  16. N. says:

Mine is probaly The Quilian games. I have always liked books where people had to go through challenges. I loved the fifth book in the series call Cirque Du Freak. I just like books like that.

  17. Cloralfan says:

My favorite pendragon is the rivers of Zadda, Its my favorite becuase thats where bobby learns the ways of the ghee worriors

  18. SDSorceress a.k.a Deshae says:

@spinney I read the first but stopped. Guess why, my friend told me to read pendragon ahhahaah pretty funny eh? But i’m gonna read it when i done with the series. My two favorites (which are hard to pick) are Rivers of Zadaa (which i always mispronounced until today) and the Quillan Games. Zadaa because of the relationship between Loor and Booby, when Saint Dane loses his cool, and when bobby is training. Quillan because there’s a scary part everywhere!!

  19. Benjamin says:

Hello there, my name is Ben and my friend David and i are avid readers of all the Pendragon books. We enjoy the world that we get plunged into ever time we flip open one of the books and we can almost feel like we are right there in Bobby’s adventure witnessin every grueling challenging and sometimes strange tasks that he must complete. We were so very sad to see the series end, but agree that The Soldiers of Halla was an honorable and perfect way to wrap up the series. But we want more. We think that you to turn this into a movie. The action and adventure that you portray in this book is so exciting and it would be so amazing if turned into a feature length film. I feel like if done right it could very well be just as good as the harry potter movies or even the star wars movies. Just an idea that i felt like i needed to share. This series definitely needs to become a movie series too. Comment back, i would love to hear what you have to say too!

  22. First Earth Traveler says:

Finished The Rivers of Zadaa, it was wicked! Now I’m on the Territory of Quillian. Booby is with Nevva Winter -I think that’s how you spell her name, I don’t have the book with me- in the city, almost about to talk to the um, uh, Trusties, that’s the word i was looking for! Can’t wait to see what happens!

  23. Ashleigh says:

I have finished all of the Pendragon books and I must say, they are by far, the absolute best books I have read. I read alot and I know that nothing I will ever read will come close to this book. Though, I finished the last book and I have to ask, please, who was the man that reappears at the end? I can’t for the life of me figure it out! I have read the entire series twice trying to figure it out and I have read the last book five times, which by the way, led me to a typo on page 282 the name “Elli” is spelt “Ellie.” But please, who is that man. He is in his fourties and wears a long light brown coat over jeans and a work shirt. He has brown hair that falls below his ears and the book says it looked like he hadn’t shaved. Who is this man? Please someone tell me so I can be at peace with this book!

  24. First Earth Traveler says:

  32. PendragonPerson400 says:

All are my favorite and this is why…
    – Book 1 had the best main plotline and intriguing story to my I literally would spaz when it wasnt in my hand
    – Book 2 had the most interesting characters and setting and kept having cliff hangers which I love
    – Book 3 was probably the most comfortable to read because while it had suspense it was greatly interesting.
    – Book 4 had the biggest comback because the description bored my but I still loved the book
    – Book 5 had the most climax to me because it was when everything became so real to Bobby
    – Book 6 had the best character development because everybody had to start truly becoming travelers
    – Book 7 was the most addicting because literally you could not put it down without reading the ending
    – Book 8 was the most shocking because so many surprises happened through the book
    – Book 9 had the best setup because it added a huge new feel to the series which is funny since 2nd earth isnt new to us
    – and finally Book 10 was just stunning, action packed, thrilling, suspenseful, humorous, omg it was so amazingly great and the best conclusion ever!

  36. Alyssa says:

I really enjoyed the Pendragon books. They are really exciting and D.J. Machale is SUCH a great writer! I constantly find myself smiling at happy times in the book, gasping at unsuspecting times, and even crying a little when something sad happens. Most books are about a battle between good and evil, and the authors ALWAYS let the good win. But that doesn’t make it a good book. D.J. Machale lets the evil win, so it’s a better story and it takes a turn you wouldn’t have expected. I haven’t read the 10th book yet, but I will read it as soon as it’s available in the library!
I read the first 9 books in about… a week, because they are SO good and I couldn’t put them down!

  37. ****Spader Gal**** says:

ikr!! uhhhhh sooooooo good! eeeep :^)

  38. warrior sammy says:

My favorite book is the rivers of Zaada ’cause that’s when Bobby gets turned into a warrior and I am able to relate a lot with Loor ’cause I do Martial Arts and I’m the girl who works the hardest and kicks all the boys butts so I know what it’s like.

  39. Andrew says:
