Morpheus Road: The Light (Discussion)

(CAREFUL, SPOILERS AHEAD)

Now that The Light has been out for a month, I figured it was okay to start a topic to discuss it.

For those who have read my Pendragon books, you know that I write stories that don’t always go where you think they’re going.  Morpheus Road is no different.  At the end of “The Light” there are some very big twists and story shifts . . . not the least of which is the reveal of what Gravedigger is all about.  Or not about.  Who thinks they know where the story is now headed?

  1. Johnny says:

To tell the truth, I’m not exactly sure. I think the next book will help me out on that note.

  2. Mike says:

I have absolutely no idea! However, I was wondering, although its “spoilers” and stuff for the next book, is Gravedigger going to make another appearance, whether it is temporary or permanent?

  3. Mike says:

On another note, I just want to say how much I loved the whole ending scene in the Graveyard, and with the many different corpses surrounding them. It was just great!

Plot details? I think that it will start with what Cooper did on his holiday and how he got the tickets (i.e. when you-know-who got the tattoo and wanted his help); then it will show when he saw Gravedigger (or whoever he appears as) and they will race or something before relaxing with his music after Gravedigger “disappears” or something. Then, you-know-who crashes into him…and hopefully see how he helped Marsh. Then the story will progress and will, hopefully show the mysterious “Morpheus Road” and the Dark and the Light…

Am I totally off the mark or…somewhat close?

Thanks for writing such great, great books, DJ!

  4. Ryan says:

First, I don’t know iff this is s spoiler, but I heard in an interview that book 2 will be called The Blue…..so I kind of have a theory on that. I think that The Light is the world of the living(obviously), the Black is the world of the dead(where Cooper is), and the Morpheus Road is how you travl to the Black from the Light. The Blue……might be some kind of area on the Morpheus Road…or something. But ya, tell me what you think.

  5. Jeremy says:

    i don’t know I didn’t even get the epilouge

  6. Ryan says:

It’s from Cooper’s point of view

  7. Harrison says:

Hey when do you think you might make book two. Because I thought your first book Morpheus Road The Light was really good. Will Gravedigger be in your next book? So I hope you make the second book soon.

  8. Eduardo says:

i read the epilouge and i think that the story will repeat but now told from coopers side of the story.i cant wait till book 2

  9. D.J. MacHale says:

The next book should be out in about a year. I’m still working on the final touches.

  10. Jeremy says:

    Thanks Ryan

  11. Lead Traveler says:

i blieve that the next book will tell Cooper’s side of the story. how he got the tickets and stuff…. i also think that he will explain how he suddenly found himself dead and how he helped Marsh and Sydeny and also what The Black is. maybe stuff like that he probably will have his own story to tell that is related to the first book. that’s what i think but i don’t know. d.j you make me expect the unexpected. kind of got that from Pendragon just changed the words.

  12. Lead Traveler says:

i loved MR!!!!!!!!!!! it was totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!! i wanted to read it again but i have a bunch of other books to read. let’s see. 1………………..2……………………3……….4…………..5…. well you get the point.

  13. Hannah Joy Brown says:

I totally loved the book! Just as good as Pendragon. I think Marsh will wind up taking the offer, because really, you wouldn’t be able to go anywhere if he didn’t. I also think Sydney will go with him, she’s too good of a character to loose. And Cooper meets them on The Road, I think, so the three of them are working together. I hope I’m matching things up correctly because I read it a little while ago and I’m trying to remember the details…

  14. Isabeau says:

I have to say that Mike’s comment (3rd comment on here) took the ideas out of my head and turned them into words. I really think that Mike is right.

  15. wayne says:

I think it will be about marsh trying to figure out he relationship his mother had with the Dark and how she found out about it.also i think the guy who gave worked with his mom (what was his name again) will appear a little more.i don’t see how it could go different cause apparently that orb protects him from ghosts unless marsh is stupid enough to smash a second one.i also believe marsh’s mother’s death and her travelings were related to The Dark.maybe she was looking for the same thing the gravedigger was before she died.i have some more theories but I’m not going to hog the light so I’ll stop here

  16. Katie says:

Hoped to love it, but really didn’t. I know you intended for the scenes to be gruesome, but, man, I couldn’t take it seriously cause Bobby’s voice was so … “there.” I felt like I was reading a creepy, different Pendragon book. Even Sydney seemed to get the voice of Marsh, -or Bobby- as the story went on.
Yup, gotta say the writing was “childish” compared to the horrifying scenes. The writing also sometimes gave away what was about to come, like D.J. wanted the writing to be innocent, but with the sudden change of wording, it was a giveaway. Let’s hope for a change… I’m looking forward to the next book’s storyline!

  17. Mike says:

    Thanks, Isabeau. 🙂

I have to add that I think we will find out more about Marsh mum’s death and that that Gravedigger’s creator (who took it out of Marsh’s mind?) will somehow be responsible for the collapsing Temple. I reckon it’s where “Hatty’s” master, the evil you-know-who guy, lived…or something.

I wonder if I’m pulling apart the story too much… Who knows…except yourself, DJ? Look forward to it. And please, let us know when you finish those “final touches”! I think we’ll all agree that hearing anything and everything about your books will be simply great – the “Inside Story of DJ’s Writing”!

Thanks for writing such amazing books and I hope you do continue, even after Morpheus Road, Equinox Curiosity Shop and Monster Princess (and this as of yet “unknown” trilogy that is hopefully still in the works?) are all finished and done and dusted. I do hope to hear of more books. I really do. But what else could possibly come from your deviously amazingly clever mind, I wonder?

    Anything…and thankfully everything!

  18. Markus says:

I think, the next part of the series will continue with cooper’s pov, and thats as much as i know. Or, think i know. :] you never fail to go somewhere where i thought i was going…if that make sense….

  19. Allan Buddy Graica says:

    Omg…
this is the number 1book of the year!!!
i read this book in a week it was allsome!!!
the ending was cool the way cooper said that he balive in ghost storys because he is one alsom….
but men i dont want to wait a year… thats a little to long -_-…
but i better be as good as this one! the story got kinda sad in the middle finding out that all off marsh hard work and baliveing coop wasint died he found out he was…but it was worth the sad finding out cooper dieath was helping marsh and coop sister founding out the clues of the garive digger…
in overall this is a must read …
im 14 years old and im in the 8th grd and there not one person in my school and in the 8th grd that not reading i told them and thay told every one and now thay want to no when the next book is coming out and a year its not long

  20. Isabeau says:

why didn’t we have an awesome blog like this for Pendragon when the last one came out? love Pendragon!
just got my older brother to love it too

  21. Lead Traveler says:

i gave my friend the 1st Pendragon book to borrow since she wanted to read them. but she was reading another serie’s book and i told her she had better finish it up soon and to start reading Pendragon and once she’s done with those i’m going to get her to read MR or maybe before. hehehehehe. -_- *looks around slyly like the meanest bad guy you can think of, that’s not in dj’s books* heheheh. i’m such a GOOD FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!! hehehehehehehehehehehehehe.

  22. Lead Traveler says:

i hope she doesn’t find this website till she reads all the Pendragon’s or maybe when she’s half way through them. but if she does find this website sooner than that she might know of my PLANS FOR HER!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. wayne says:

to Isabeau: even though the blog is nice they’ve lost a lot of posters that they had before the closing of the forums.right now this topic has about 25 posts but if this had been on the forums it would have taken up pages.maybe the decline in the popularity of the site is due to the fact that the forum was made up of all pendragon fans and maybe some, now that pendragon is over, just didn’t read MD and therefor have no interest in this site.

  24. Markus says:

OMG, DJ! What is Marshall’s middle name? Or bobbys? OH! WHATS MARKS?????????????????? (he is my fav. cuz his name is SSSOOOO much like mine….)

  25. Isabeau says:

    Wayne,
thanks, i had been a contributor to the old forums, I just didn’t see anything about a discusion for The Soldiers of Halla.
Thanks though, I think it’s neat that we all try and help each other out with stuff like that 😉

  26. D.J. MacHale says:

I think the other forums were way busier because it was so open and easy and there were tons of topics. But that also became the problem because it got so crazy. So we’re trying to figure out how to get the best of both worlds…to have those who want to make interesting comments have a place to do that, while keeping the goofiness to a minimum.

  27. joey says:

so…i have a question…i loved the book, and i’m definitely going to read the next two…that leads me to my question. since this series is only a trilogy, is it more possible for it to be turned into a movie trilogy? just a thought, since they’re (i’m anticipating the next two are going to be AMAZING) fantastic.

  28. Icarus says:

Mr. MacHale, although I can’t say for sure where the book will head from here (as that will take the fun out of it) I must say that the book was amazing. Here I thought I’d have a good book for a few days — nope, only two.
But I felt kind of bad with Gravedigger was “nailed” (is that the right word, I wonder?). I don’t know why but I prefer Gravedigger over Damon (which is surprising as I’m a mythology geek). I was just a tad bit sad to see the creepy Gravedigger go.
Apologies for such a long comment, but again, I did enjoy the book. So thanks for sharing such a story with us, sir!

  29. Brianna says:

D.J. MacHale, if your reading this, I am completely honored to be writing to a professional writer like you! Ok, I’m acting a bit of a kiss up, but your books are AMAZING!!! With a capital A. lol. I have read the Pendragon series, as well as Morpheus Road. I love how you got both the stories together with Mark working at the trophy place, and it being at Stony Brook… again, amazing! But I was wondering if you could kinda stop by at a Barnes and Noble… in New Jersey… kinda in Essex County? We have a bunch of fans here waiting for you to come around a 20,000 mile radius of us. (Just kidding, but really, we’re waiting!) Please come visit!
    Hobey ho!

  30. Taylor says:

Morpheus Road and Pendragon are both awesome! Morpheus Road reminded me of the Stephen King book IT because Gravedigger was just in everyones mind, the ornaments exploding with blood, the flashbacks, etc.
    it was good

  31. Jan@eatingyabooks says:

Was blown away by Morpheus Road: The Light and will be anxiously awaiting the second book. I listen to it on audio and plan on reading it too. I am not easily scared, but love when words grab hold and grip you in such away that it is impossible to stop reading. You did that!

I have recommended this book to lots of people.

As to where the next one is going, I haven’t a clue, except I am pretty sure Marsh will find out more about his mother’s involvement, and I am hoping that Sydney and Coop will support Marsh in this one too. Can’t wait for number two.

  32. James says:

i’ve read all of your pendragon books, and just finished morpheus road. i think your writing style is incredible and you have inspired me to begin writing my own book. thank you D.J!

  33. James says:

any idea of what the 2nd book will be called?

  34. D.J. MacHale says:

I know exactly what the second book will be called…but I ain’t tellin’.

  35. Lead Traveler says:

Jennifer, please ignore all the comments up above. that is for Morpheus Road another one of dj’s totally awesome books that’s goin’ to be a trilogy. you can read them after you’ve read Pendragon. when you get here let me know by using your name, then you can change it and also once you get here i’ll think of a better place to talk to you that won’t give away any spoilers about MR or Pendragon.

  36. Lead Traveler says:

Jennifer, i’m listening to music right now and one the lyrics said that ‘no loyal friend was there for me!’ and i feel that right now you’re not being very loyal. you’re an hour late given our appointed time. that’s not being a very good friend. and sorry if you didn’t find the place, i wrote as much detail to get here as i could and i even called you to explain my mistake and you said you got it. so… you better say something tomorrow if you don’t come soon. i’m leaving at five, just to let you know.

  37. Markus says:

DJ! You didn’t answer my question!!!!!! WHAT MARSHALLS MIDDLE NAME???????????

  38. Lead Traveler says:

Markus! he doesn’t have time to do all your wishes! jeez! calm down!

  39. Colin says:

hmmm. I am confused about the ending. Does it mean the next book will be from coopers view, or Seaver’s again. And what is with Damon (I think thats his name). Did he get rid of gravedigger forever, or just temporarily, or what? The ending was very confusing, hopefully the next book will be out soon.

  40. Markus says:

Colin, that is the question of the century…
Oh, and Lead Traveler, you shouldn’t be talking. *cough Darkness with Boise cough*

  41. Markus says:

    @Icarus,
How’d you get your picture on here?

  42. Lead Traveler says:

    @Colin
i’m definetly not a stalker. why do you suspect i am? that’s just plain wierd.
    @Markus
what do you mean i shouldn’t be talking and what’s with cough Darkness with Boise cough? i don’t get that.

  43. Lead Traveler says:

also Markus, the way i know how to get a picture on there is to right click on the person thing and i think you either go to set as backround(probably not) or my pictures. i tried it a while ago.

  44. second traveler says:

    @Colin
i’m definetly not a stalker. why do you suspect i am? that’s just plain wierd.
    @Markus
what do you mean i shouldn’t be talking and what’s with cough Darkness with Boise cough? i don’t get that.

  45. second traveler says:

LEAD TRAVLERER YOU ARE A STALKER

  46. Lead Traveler says:

how am i a stalker? i would really like to know. i don’t even know where any of you guys/girls live and i don’t want to know and i don’t even know if you second traveler are a girl or a guy. and please stop copying me and other people.

  47. Lead Traveler says:

if you guys say i’m a stalker again. i will never come on here again. i know that ain’t much of a threat, but please don’t make me. it’s more of a threat to myself, so if you totally HATE ME, then i guess you could, you know….

  48. Doug Roth says:

will marsh and sydney date please tell

  49. Doug Roth says:

    @ secind traveler
    u r a stalker

  50. Lead Traveler says:

    @Doug Roth
how is second traveler a stalker? i don’t think anyone is a stalker (especially myself) unless they come over to my house or are following me everywhere and so far no one has and i’m very thankful for that and if someone is they are really good at remaining hidden from my sight.
