I had a request to start a blog where you could weigh in on thoughts about a movie based on The Merchant of Death and to discuss casting. This isn’t to say that a movie is imminent. It isn’t. But I’m working with some folks to develop one now, so you never know. (Just don’t hold your breath!)
So, here’s the blog. Have fun.

MissBookworm says:
I’d probably watch it everyday. I can imagine my mother coming in and saying, “You’re watching it AGAIN?” at which point, I would start my rant about how it was magical and that I needed to watch it to live.
Challenger Black says:
Haha, same here. I’d just watch it every day and people would be like, “How can you keep watching it?”
Can’t get tired of Pendragon.
Challenger Black says:
It’s been a while though since the blog was posted. 23 days. I seem to be getting more anxious every day. I keep hoping we’ll get news the next day, and there’s nothing.
It’s so hard waiting! 🙂
MissBookworm says:
I read this review on the Merchant of Death a while ago, and the guy said the stroyline was confusing, becuase it switched from Denduron back to Second Earth
I don’t really see what he meant about the confusion caused by the journals. I understood it completely…
Challenger Black says:
I know. I never found that to be confusing. It was very straightforward, going from Bobby back to Mark and Courtney and so on. Even in Raven Rise, where it switches from a number of character’s points of views, it’s still easy enought of follow.
Challenger Red says:
I was really interested in the Pendragon saga im mean the adventure of going through time and space would be really cool. I read Black Water and it reminded me alot of Planet of the Apes from the 1968 version( astronaut crew who crash-land on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute animals wearing animal skins.
Taylor discovers that the apes, who can talk, are in control and are divided into a strict caste system: the gorillas as police, military, and hunters; the orangutans as administrators, politicians, lawyers and religious clerics; and the chimpanzees as intellectuals and scientists. Humans, who cannot talk, are considered feral vermin and are hunted and either killed outright, enslaved for manual labor, or used for scientific experimentation.
Challenger Red says:
yeah it reminds me alot of that book
D says:
Johnny Deep as Saint Dane. Might be able to pull it off.
Mozartghost says:
No.
Not EVIL enough.
MissBookworm says:
DEFINATELY not evil enough.
Ethan Farina says:
same here challenger black, I’m towards the end of book 10 atm, so im very depressed at the moment. If he made a series, I’d be watching them over and over until every scene was stuck in my brain to replay without watching the movie lol. D.J. should absolutely be the director of the merchant of death so such a great book isn’t ruined like Eragon and Percy Jackson…
Ethan Farina says:
jonny depp? giv me a break dude.
Ethan Farina says:
challenger red…….. most of that comment was about planet of the apes…………..and we don’t need a drunken pirate playing the role of the most evil frikin’ spiritual being in all of Halla…. no offence johnny depp.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, I agree. It would be great if he could be director. At the very least, he’d need to be heavily involved. Have you seen the latest Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader? They changed that so much, it was nothing like the book. It was a terrible adaption…
Ethan Farina says:
THANK YOU CHALLENGER BLACK, THAT WAS THE MOVIE I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER TO PUT IN THAT COMMENT, LOL 😛
Challenger Black says:
No problem!
It could have been so much better if they’d stuck with Andrew Adamson. The first movie was great, the second had some changes, but still honored the spirit of the book. The third movie…not so much.
Ethan Farina says:
although it wasn’t as bad a screw up as percy jackson and eragon, mostly because it wasn’t the directors’ fault, but more so the fact that the economy sucks and everything in hollywood recently has been low quality in movies.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, Eragon was terrible. And I thought Percy Jackson would be an okay film, but I was greatly dissapointed. But I agree. Seems right now like a lot of movies (especially fantasy) seems to be low quality and not done as well as they could be.
Pendragon deserves dedication and to be done well. It has such potential to be amazing.
Ethan Farina says:
Well said black. well said. and DJ, if you’re reading this right now, just know that we have faith in you, and that if you work really hard at this it can become way better than the Harry Potter series.
Cool Kid says:
CHOOSE YOUR ACTORS WISELY. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME AS BIG OR BIGGER THAN HARRY POTTER. IF YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT ACTORS AND SCREENPLAY WRITERS AND DIRECTOR. AND MAKE SURE THAT MORGAN FREEMAN IS GUNNY OR THE WORLD WILL END. THIS MOVIE IS GONNA GO DOWN IN HISTORY!!! 😀
Branger says:
Step 1: find a company with good special effects
Mozartghost says:
Step II. Find Jerry Bruckhiemer, Gore Verbinski, and Hans Zimmer.
Loor Luver says:
I luv the book-it wouldbe better in a movie, so i am not sure where will the casting be?
MissBookworm says:
I like how there’s always something funny or exciting you can go back and read. Last night when i was reading Raven Rise, Bobby went all psychopath on Saint Dane, and I ended up reading that chapter about twenty times.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, I love that part of the book! It’s awesome.
Challenger Green says:
I thought from the start of this series it should be made into a series of movies, the storyline really catches peoples attention and the progression of the story throughout the book gives you an emotional attachment to the characters, just what breeds a public attachment to a movie chain(ex/harry potter) , I’m finishing up The Quillian Games for the 10th+ time and seeing this blog really gets me excited for the possibility of a movie! I would deffinatly go and see it over and over!
eelong rulz says:
i already know what i’m going to be doing for when the news comes out it’s becoming a movie! so excited!
Challenger Black says:
Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing eelong rulz? I know I’m going to re-read Merchant of Death and throw a party of some sort 🙂
Challenger Green says:
That’s what I’m going to be doing also Black!
Challenger Black says:
And I’ll for sure be making a Merchant of Death shirt to wear on the opening night. I made a Press shirt a little while ago, but I’ve worn it so much, it’s pretty faded, so I’ll have to make a new shirt.
John says:
see my only problem with a bunch of these is that no one i know likes pendragon. one thing i think there should be is traveler rings. i would totally buy one and this would be a way for fans to find other fans in their area. also no johnny depp. i have hated all of his movies. i want to be able to enjoy pendragon movies. and since i only work 4-5 days a week and dont do a lot of other things i would watch the movie every day. 🙂 also i love how we all seems to like the same books. 🙂
John says:
also bout to re-read cloral. one of my favor territories. 🙂
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, Cloral is just amazing! Or spiff, as Spader would put it. I’d be so excited to see Cloral on the big screen. No doubt it would be the most stunning territory.
John says:
Yea i am hoping its a fan audition so i can try for spader. 🙂
John says:
i cant wait to hear the music from the flumes. 🙂
Mike says:
If there’s a movie, it had better be pretty close to the book, not like Harry Potter. I think the movies would be very successful because like you say in each of your books, you can pick any book 1-10 and still get the gist of it. I grew up with your books waiting every year for the next book to come out. It was the first book that I could picture myself in, playing as Bobby. I think Heath Ledger would have been a great Saint Dane RIP. Use the guy who plays as Voldemort as Saint Dane. E mail me if you want a character to play as Bobby! I’m 15 but look like I’m 14 perfect for Bobby!
Tylee says:
Hobey ho!
This movie is gonna be amazing!
MissBookworm says:
I was thinking that I wanted a Traveler Ring this morning! They have the One Ring from Lord of the Rings! They should totally do that for Pendragon!
Tylee says:
Yeah, Traveler rings would be so awesome! I’d so wear it everyday!
Challenger Black says:
I agree. Traveler Rings would be a great idea. I’m sure they’d be hugely popular among fans. I know I’d love to buy one.
Challenger Black says:
They should make Challenger shirts as well. They could have jerseys for Challenger Red, Green, Yellow. That’d be pretty cool! 🙂
GOCLORAL says:
Okay, barely one month this blog has been up and there`s over 800 comments!!! 😀
@ Eli
I checked out your blog and I dont know how to, like, post any comments. Could you get back to me on that `cause I would like to know how.
@ missbookworm
Ya I nearly died of laughter at that part where Bobby went all crazy on Saint Dane. I read it about a million times.
Hey just wondering, how do you make a t-shirt `cause I would LOVE a Courtney one, or one with all the female travelers and acolytes on it. That would be cool.
I`m re-reading book 8 for the 3rd time. I just past the part where Courtney almost killed Mark. 3rd time reading it and it`s still shocking. Though I have to admit my favorite part is where Bobby is jumped by the Jakills.
DON`T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN`T FINISHED THE LAST CHAPTER OF BOOK 10 FOR THE 1ST TIME!!
Anyone have a clue to who that person who gives Bobby his journals back is, `cause I`m thinking Uncle Press. But has anyone noticed how it seems Bobby and Courtney forget about travelers, and territories, and the whole battle for Halla?
Sir says:
I disagree with most people that this movie series is gonna be bigger than Harry Potter. I mean, the Pendragon series is great, and I love it. But I also read the Harry Potters, and that was great. And I think that the movies represented the books brilliantly. (and i hope that Pendragon will do that) But Harry Potter was a huge movie franchise, beating the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. I somehow doubt that Pendragon will do that. But there is no doubt in my mind that many people will watch it. That it will be fantastic. And that genterations to come will watch it over and over. Just as I, and many others with me, will.
Sir says:
I hate to leave another comment, but I promise, this one will be a bit shorter. Just a quick question. I have an idea of who should play Uncle Press. His name is David Tennant, and he has acting experience. Idk if you’ve heard of the BBC television show Doctor Who, but he played the title character. He does his lines better than most I’ve heard. But he’s Scottish, and can do a British accent. Idk how well his english one is, but! He’s a great actor, and i love watchin him. My question is, can Uncle Press be British or Scottish, cause i would love to see David Tennant doing it.
Teek says:
Hobey ho!
This movie will be brilliant!
And so we go says:
So first things first
Dear D.J.,
I just came from a site where they were having regular people post videos to audition for the maximum ride movie, and having fans of the series vote for who they liked most for each character. So I suggest that, when things start coming together for the movie to get underway do this sort of thing, and have it run for X amount of time…then after that time is up, the top X for each character get to actually in person audition as well. Just a thought, because it seems like a really cool way and you never know what kind of undiscovered talent you might find.
And so we go says:
(had to separate my posts)
Now, in my opinion, as well as most everyone else, I think Johnny Depp is a great actor, but for the love of god he has no place in the pendragon series(specially as Saint Dane). In fact, I believe that you shouldn’t use well known uber popular actors that are in the main stream for the most part. Yes, I think an experienced and potentially mainstream actor would possibly work out for saint dane like alan rickman worked out so well for snape. But for the younger set, go with some fresher faces (and please don’t use the boy from Percy jackson). And while morgan freeman would make a good gunny, I personally picture a taller person, but would be quite happy with freeman, just stating my opinion.
Also, in terms of popularity, for those who think harry potter is better, you do realize that it’s gotten 10x more press due to movies and whatnot. I believe strongly that pendragon, when popularized and brought more to the forefront of the public, that we could possibly see it eclipse harry potter, and even if it doesn’t, hallelujah for a strong strong increase in pendragon fandom.
And so we go says:
Just thought of this:
“My other ride is a flume” shirts!!!!! WOOO!
Yorn says:
@ And so we go
I agree!
Amanda says:
hahaha or some ” I’m from Second Earth” shirts with each territory…those t-shirts would probably be my whole wardrobe.
