I had a request to start a blog where you could weigh in on thoughts about a movie based on The Merchant of Death and to discuss casting. This isn’t to say that a movie is imminent. It isn’t. But I’m working with some folks to develop one now, so you never know. (Just don’t hold your breath!)
So, here’s the blog. Have fun.

Challenger Black says:
Yeah, having unknown actors would be a great thing to consider, as a lot of people have agreed on, especially for the three main characters.
Z@daa says:
i think that a movie would be awesome!! i loved the books 😀 they are my favorite. and i agree on he unknown actors
and so we go…
Z@daa says:
oops i meant “the”
Holly says:
yeah i agree completely too! Just because a movie doesn’t have big famous actors, doesn’t mean it can’t be good! I think it would be better if there were unknown actors in it!
Challenger Black says:
I agree, for sure. Starting with unknown actors would be good, especially because they could grow to become more well known, and they’d have a real chance at playing the parts without being recognized as someone else from another movie. They would be new, fresh faces.
Holly says:
yah. cuz i do hate it when i watch a certain movie with an actor, and the next movie they’re in, i think of them as the character in the other movie! if that even makes sense. haha. so new unknown actors are the way to go!!
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, that’s happened to me as well. I guess it’s because you’re used to seeing them as another character, and that image is sort of stuck in your head. But that wouldn’t be a problem with new actors.
Vo Spader says:
i like how its getting to almost 2000 comments and if you look back they all say the same thing. we want new actors.
Challenger Black says:
Pretty much. Repetition can be a good thing though. Can help emphasize things 🙂
veelox0 says:
We need new actors! That is a fact!
Melanie says:
For sure 🙂
Z@daa says:
Agreed! I think we should all keep a look out for people and then report back to us 🙂
Brittany says:
If this becomes a movie I would be the first in line to see it!!! I love these books!!
Sammy says:
There’s a reason your books were so successful. If you manage to get a studio on board, demand that the movie stays true to the source material. Think of the difference between the Harry Potter films, which did that and were a huge success, and the Golden Compass, Eragon and Lemony Snicket films, which didn’t do that and flopped. There’s a good reason for that.
On that same note, don’t let some of the heavier themes of your books get diluted just so the movies can be more easily catered to children. As fun as the adventures are, it’s the hard choices that really make the series compelling–Bobby’s dilemma with the Hindenburg, for instance, or his attempt to end the war with Saint Dane by trapping himself permanently in Rayne, or the moment with Naymeer on the helicopter.
Finally, even if you are able to cast a well-known adult actor for Uncle Press or Saint Dane, keep the focus heavily on Bobby, Mark and Courtney. I’m thinking here of the Lemony Snicket and Golden Compass films in particular, which managed to get big name actors and subsequently seemed to forget who their stories were really about.
Challenger Black says:
@Brittany
Same here! I’ll be first in line to see this 🙂
denduron!!! says:
I really hope that the movie at least manages to follow the plot of the book. Because in some movies,(Percy Jackson), even if the movie is good, the entire plot is changed around for the movie.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, and I can understand if some things need to be removed, or changed, that’s just the way it is. But it’s going too far when you go and completely change the book’s plot and it no longer resembles anything from the book. It wouldn’t bother me if a few things had to be changed/removed. What would bother me is if I see the movie as something entirely different from the book.
Courtney chetwynde says:
Ya they better not do what they did with percy jackson. Because that jus ruined the series!!!!
Vo Spader says:
yea in Eragon they cut it in half and took out stuff that they needed in there. such as solumbum (cant remember how to spell the name correct) angelas werecat which is a major part of the books.
veelox0 says:
@Sammy
Golden compass was a failure compared to the books and I totallyagreee with everything
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, I agree with everything Sammy said. And like Eragon, Golden Compass was a big disappointment.
Uncle Press says:
I think the movie should be made soon, because now with Harry Potter done there’s a big chance for a new book-to-movie blockbuster series. Some of the books made into movies didn’t catch on because Harry Potter wasn’t done
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, that’s a good point. Harry Potter was the center of attention, and was the big spotlight, but now there’s a golden opportunity for Pendragon to become the next big thing. It’s got all the potential to become loved by movie-goers.
aquaneer ryder says:
definately, i bet the pendragon movie will be amazing!
i just hope they make it similar to the book.
but just the idea of a movie makes me excited!!!!
and hobey! i didn’t come on yesterday and already there’s more than 1800 comments!
you guys are awesome 🙂
and so we go~
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, I was so excited when I first saw this blog. It’s been a while, but I’m even more excited, just thinking that a movie could possibly get made.
Indeed, and so we go.
Uncle Press says:
I’m just worried that the hunger games movie or mortal insttuments movie will take up Pendragon’s well deserved spotlight
Uncle Press says:
I meant instruments. Sorry
Challenger Black says:
I hope not. Not that Hunger Games isn’t good, it is, but I really think Pendragon deserves to have its moment in the spotlight.
BuggyReality says:
The next book to movie series will be the hunger games.
Uncle Press says:
At least Hunger Games in only a trilogy.By the time it’s done the Pendragon movies will not even be half way over.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, that’s a good point. Hunger Games is a trilogy, whereas Pendragon is a ten-book series. At least it’s not as long as Harry Potter, with seven books.
Uncle Press says:
I’m also worried about the movies rating. The first and fifth were pretty graphic
BuggyReality says:
That’s true. So what other book to movie series(es?) do you guys want to see, besides Pendragon of course? I want to see Fablehaven.
Challenger Black says:
Yeah, I agree with Fablehaven. That’d be cool to see.
Uncle Press says:
That’s a pretty good choice but I’m more interested in the secret series.
Challenger Black says:
I’d like to see the rest of the Narnia books made into movies, but after Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I’m not so sure how I’d feel if they made the rest, if they continued on in that fashion.
BuggyReality says:
Oh yeah that book with the synesthesia thing. I got annoyed reading the first book where it kept saying I won’t tell you the girl’s name or describe what she looked like or a million other things. I also can’t wait to see the 39 clues, which apparently is in development now.
Uncle Press says:
One thing I don’t like about the narnia series is they skip every other book. All the movies are only about the one group of kids
Vo Spader says:
narnai was to childish in my opinion.
BuggyReality says:
Oh, I havent seen the Dawn Treader yet, did they ruin it?
Challenger Black says:
I know. I’d love to see Magician’s Nephew get made, but so far, they’re only focusing on the Pevensie’s. Seems like they won’t take a chance with the other stories, even though they’re just as good.
Challenger Black says:
Yes, they pretty much ruined it. A green mist villain was added, the White Witch appeared in it, and overall, it just wasn’t that great of a movie.
Uncle Press says:
Does anyone want to see Artemis Fowl made into a movie?
Challenger Black says:
I actually haven’t gotten around to reading those books yet, but I probably will soon. I’ve heard they’re pretty good.
Uncle Press says:
Has anybody read Darren Shan? The movie was pretty good compared to the books even though there was no point for monkey girl. Demonata his other series would make pretty good movies
BuggyReality says:
Oh, I want to see Artemis Fowl movie. Those books are great, espescially the latest one: the atlantic complex.
Uncle Press says:
One thing I thought would be made into a movie almost right away was Suzanne Collins series before hunger games Gregor the Overlander
Uncle Press says:
I feel like there is only one area in books that doesn’t became very popular and that’s the middle ages. Think about it we have wizards, demigods, criminal kid masterminds, protecters of the universe (pendragon) and we have post apocalyptic wars (Hunger Games) why not a story about medieval times with dragons and kings wize old wizards
Uncle Press says:
Sorry there’s supposed to be an and in between king and wize. Sorry
Uncle Press says:
Has any body read the Eric Rex books. I saw that D.J reviewed them and he seemed to like them so I’m wondering if I should get them
