Morpheus Road takes place in Stony Brook Connecticut

If you’ve read the excerpt from The Light, you’ll know that I’ve set the action of Morpheus Road in Bobby Pendragon’s hometown of Stony Brook.  Basically, I did it for fun.    Pendragon readers will (hopefully) remember many of the places that Marshall and his friends go to from Bobby’s story.  It was fun for me to re-visit that town, though technically it was re-re-visiting because I based Stony Brook on my hometown of Greenwich, CT.  (And yes, though the original Garden Poultry doesn’t exist anymore on “The Ave”, there is another one open in Old Greenwich so you can still get those great fries.)

Garden Catering in Old Greenwich, and also in Stamford CT- replace the old Garden Poultry on the Ave. You can still order a “High Schooler” to go: chicken nuggets and fries with plenty of seasoning, with a coke.

  2. D.J. MacHale says:

And we all know what that secret “seasoning” is!

  3. Trpy says:

Very cool! 😀 Can’t wait to read this new series. Still missing Pendragon, though!(Amazing series!!!!!)

  4. Connor says:

I LOVED THE PENDRAGON SERIES SO MUCH! Seriously. I canot canot canot wait for the new book to come out. I am going to be there at a bookstore the second it comes out. Even if I have to camp over night. I am going to get that book and read it and then wait eagerly for the next. I loved the pendragon series almost too much, you are my fav author of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Human Torch 2 says:

Pendragon is the best series of books I’ve ever read in my life! My entire family loves this amazing story you have woven, Mr. MacHale. Well, my youngest sister (she’s 12) refuses to give it a second chance, though we keep trying. Anyway, I’m pleasantly surprised to find out that the Morpheus Road Series (Or is it a trilogy? I honestly can’t remember at the moment.) takes place in nice old “boring” Stony Brook, CT. Having said this, I have a couple of questions that I’m sure everyone here wants to know the answers to: Is the Morpheus Road Series set in the same universe as Pendragon? If so, will there be any, well, cameos by characters from Pendragon? In particular, will Saint Dane involved in some way?

  6. ivan says:

what a great way to end a story of the pendragon series
my favorite was the all of the action and adventure every part of the scene was awesome you are like a god, best above all the other authors, your the best

  7. Ashley (DFC/Traveler) says:

These are the times I want to hug you DJ. I love it when authors encorperate parts from one series in another. However, I do hope that you don’t go for the same overall set-up as you did in Pendragon. Although I loved it, I don’t think that my mind would be able to hold such a complicatedly simple concept again.

  8. michaela says:

uum D.J. you are a cool writer and all and i have a bigggg question and a plead please make a pendragon movie!!!!!!also what inspired u to be a writer

  9. DJ says:

Though Morpheus Road is set in Stony Brook, it has nothing to do with the Pendragon story. Though there is one mention of a character from the Pendragon story, but I’ll leave that as a surprise.

  10. Fallon says:

I would LOVE it if you made a Pendragon movie. If someone else did it I would be like “well, I want to see it but what if they screwed it up horribly?” but if you did it then you’d do it right.

  11. LiNk5070 says:

Hey D.J., I think you should make it that the person in your new book meets up with Mark or someone earlier before all the traveling stuff started. Oh yea, and Pendragon is my favorite book series ever

  12. Airion says:

Hey D.J. could you get a page on the site set up to display the various pendragon edition covers? I enjoy seeing the covers from other countries and all the different editions. Author Darren Shan has something like this on his site if you need an example. Looking forward to reading your new series.

  13. Michael Thomas says:

Every new thing I hear about this book makes me that much more excited. I loved the Pendragon series to the point where I didn’t think I would ever enjoy reading books until I picked up Merchant of Death and couldn’t stop until I read through Reality Bug (from there I waited for the other 6 books to come out and have read them too). I can’t wait to fall in love with another series.

Also, does anyone know how the book will be written (as in third person, first person, or the hybrid we saw in the Pendragon series)?

And regarding the movie comment, I’d like to see a movie but I’m worried (as any fan would be) of how it would turn out. Movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter made near perfect book-to-movie adaptations but if Eragon was any indicator (at least in my honest opinion), it is possible to make a movie that doesn’t cover enough of a book’s content or strays a little too far from the original plot.

  14. Mike says:

I agree with you, Michael Thomas. It would be a little scary if it went as badly as Eragon sadly did. Best to stay as books until the right person comes along!!

Back on subject, as everyone has pretty much said, we are so excited about the Light. Also, does that mean, since we’re seeing a character being mentioned – woohoo! – will the story take place in the same school?

  15. DJ says:

Same school…Davis Gregory High. And one character will be mentioned.

  16. Mike says:

Oh wow! Cannot wait! I wish I could use a flume to travel to Third Earth and read it… Shame.

  17. Swiffy says:

    Swiffy sez:

Setting the story in Stony Brook, Connecticut was an awesome move. I like how it “revisits” the Pendragon series, because I was so sad when the series was finalized.
But, like they say, “All good things must come to an end.”

I also like Mike’s idea of fluming to Third Earth to read the book…

  18. Swiffy says:

Also, forgot to add, that from the very first book, I had wished Hollywood would recognize it’s potential as an amazing movie. In fact, every so often, when I read them, I would think, “How would this translate into movie form?”

  19. Mike says:

Thanks for liking my idea, Swiffy! Oh and the answer to your question: “It wouldn’t.”

It is too large to be a single movie, ten movies is a stretch, it wouldn’t really be suited to a series as each series would have to be based around a territory, meaning it would HAVE to run to 10 seasons, and thus dragging it out for…200-odd episodes.

The best idea is having it as a MINI-series. Not as expensive as a movie, but equal time – ten, two-to-three hour episodes, each consisting of various actors, sets, etc., and it would be complete without question. But if it was ten films, each one with different viewing figures, would make it harder to be continued, as they would need massive viewing figures on each film – best example: Eragon.

Anyway, sorry for dragging on, but that’s my opinion – mini series, each episode named the same as the book. 🙂 Gotta say, it could work! Its that, or go to Japan and get them to computer generate it to exactly DJ’s image. 😛

  20. Mike says:

The best example of it being made into moveis is Eragon. Sadly, it failed…miserably! They’re never going to make Eldest now. And Stormbreaker, too. Both are failures. Real shame…

  21. spader5 says:

But Pendragon would make a great movie! But a Pendragon video game would be better:)

  22. Michael Thomas says:

I suppose it would be hard. Each book could easily cover an entire 90-120 minute film, and with 10 of them to cover a series of 10 movies is quite a commitment for both the actors and director. 10 films = 10 chances to slip up and disappoint fans. Longer series take quite a few risks (Eragon proves it isn’t easy to stick to the paper).

A 60-90 minute episode per week covering all 10 books might work better, but at the same time would probably not receive nearly as much attention or budget for that matter.

At the current state, a movie series is a complete hit and miss sorta thing. If it ends up being successful, the books will become that much more popular and the series will have a much higher reputation overall. If it is a disappointment, then fans will regret ever wishing for a movie.

    @spader5

‘m guessing if there ever was a Pendragon video game, it would be a movie licensed game based off of the films meaning we’d have to see either both a movie and a game or neither.

  23. Mike says:

It would be hit and miss, wouln’t it? Better to wait and be amazing than be churned out and ruined I suppose…

Do you mind if I ask what you think, DJ? Whats your opinion? I know we saw a post on the old forums years ago, but what is your opinion now? Is it still the same as it was then? Sorry to ask. I’m just curious…

  24. D.J. MacHale says:

I’ve met with and spoken to a lot of people about making Pendragon movies. It is a huge undertaking. Most producers/studios are scared off by the fact that it’s ten books. I’ve also spoken to a lot of people who would want to start combining books, but I think that’s a big mistake. It might make one or two good movies, but it would change the overall story completely…and the fastest way to alienate the fan base of a book, is to start monkeying with the story in a significant way.

So there’s been all sorts of back and forth like this (and on many other considerations with making a Pendragon movie) Bottom line is, I have yet to find the right people who either want to make the movies, or I feel will do the series justice.

So, will it ever happen? Maybe. But if it doesn’t, that’s okay with me too.

  25. spader5 says:

Will there ever be another Pendragon spin-off? it would be cool to see what all of the territories were like before this generation of travellers.

  26. Russ Myers says:

I am a 46 year-old kid who really loves the Pendragon series. All ten books must be made into a film series. I am not sure why movie-makers would be so nervous about ten movies. Look at the Harry Potter movies; they’ve all been quite successful.

  27. Swiffy says:

How about a T.V. show? It wouldn’t have to break too far off from the main plot…
It’d be one of those things to look forward to in every week.
    “Hey, it’s Saturday! Pendragon’s on at 8!”

  28. spader5 says:

That would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is so much that can be done with a Pendragon show!

  29. Nowomannocry says:

Ya know, I really wanna be taken seriously here.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m half way through the tenth book, and I like it.
But with the other… 8 books, I look back, and very few events took place that were not explained in the ninth and tenth book.

Which leads me to make the comment that the other books were non-essential.

The first book, as an introduction, the second book i stand up for because it’s just so fun, but it’s indeed superfluous. And then all the other books are simply about charecter building.
( i see the other side of it- I’m just a kid without any honest degree in literature) but still!

Everything in the plot is explained in the ninth and tenth book.
    the first.. book introduces it….

What am i trying to say?

Give me a reason to stand up for the others.
    ___________

    As for the new series,
Could we have another clue of the plot? (is it fiction or non fiction?)

  30. Random High Schooler says:

There HAS been something I’ve been wondering since the series ended that was never explained.

    Who’s Tom Dorney?

He was mentioned as the former acolyte from Second Earth before Courtney and Mark took over. He supposedly kept Uncle Press’s journals. Does that mean that he was actually Uncle Press, making sure that Mark and Courtney got the job as acolytes, or something to that effect? He wasn’t mentioned again after Book 5, though I kept on wondering about him.

  31. Stephon-gcb says:

Besides the area of stony brook will there be any other connections to the pendragon series like other places or charecter names?

  32. Stephon-gcb says:

Sorry about the double post but as I was reading through the other comments about a pendragon movie I thought how you(d.j.) used to be a tv and movie script writter so you could write the movies script and then over see the directing….just wanted to throw that out there tell me what you think. Also a pendragon video game would be awesome!!!!

  33. Rachy says:

a video game would be awesome! and you can be on saint danes side too! aw man, id be addicted for the rest of my life if they did it!

  34. Swiffy says:

Like wrote before, a Pendragon video game may be cool, but it probably won’t happen without a movie. D.J. also wrote that doing a movie would be hard.
What I think wouldn’t be too hard is a T.V. show, like I wrote before.

  35. luis says:

true a t.v. show would be awesome and there doesnt have to be a movie because the show dragon ball z has video games without movies and well they now did one but theres cartoon movies too and they didnt make a video game out of that

  36. luis says:

sory my computer times messed up its actualy 5:12

  37. luis says:

sory for the third comment i just forgot but if you do make a tv show contact my moms email adress because i want to be in the show and my moms email addres is Dfarage@sbcglobal.net

  38. Stephon-gcb says:

YeAh but as I said before d.j. Used to write scripts for tv shows and movies so he could just write the script for a pendragon movie and the oversee the production of it

  39. Swiffy says:

Geez luis, if there’s a T.V. show, i’ve gotta be in it! I gave you the idea! lol

  40. Pendragonfan says:

Can’t wait for the series to come out!

  41. The Soldier Of Halla says:

Where’s the excerpt from The Light thing?

  42. Swiffy says:

Click “Books” at the top, then “Morpheus Road”, then “Book 1: The Light”.

  43. Sean says:

LiNk5070, that would not be good. If the character met up with someone that bring the whole thoughts of Mark Dimond down. He would not freak out about the Travelers. He would be with the main character. Besides, 52 days pretty much means that its almost done… right DJ?

  44. Raymundus says:

You should seriously consider a high budget pendragon one hour tv series, because i almost choked myself after watching percy jackson. It’s like they did not read the book…And I love Pendragon way more. I might kill the people making the movie. This way, nothing will be left out.

  45. Stephon-gcb says:

I have mixed feelings a Pendragon movie would be AWESOME!!! but what if they ruined the movie and a movie also takes away some of the elements of imagination.

  46. solara traveler says:

D.J. please make the pendragon movie your self. Did you see the percy jackson movie yet? thats what happens when they srew with a good book. please dont let that happen to pendragon

  47. Swiffy says:

I have yet to see the Percy Jackson movie, but since all my friends say it didn’t keep up with the story plot, then there should be caution when making a Pendragon movie. That’s part of the reason I suggested a T.V. show.

  48. laithe says:

MR Machale I was wondering if some one guessed the character from the pendragon series metioned in the morpheous road trilogy you would tell him if he was correct or not?

  49. Corin from Cloral says:

I loved the books with my life! I bought them all on my nook but I was kinda wondering… Where did Saint Dane go? When he was defeated where did he go?
I’ve been to Garden Poultry before there fries are yummy!

  50. Sabrina says:

pendragon was my life!!!! i say was cuz you went and took down the forum!!!!!!!i was broken hearted!!!!!and now with your new book coming out i am even more heart broken then before!!! i want more pendragon!!! and haveing the new book take place in stoney brook too….well that just hurt!!!! hope your happy!!
