On the old forums I made a post about this, but since they no longer exist, I’ll write something again.
The final chapter of The Soldiers of Halla has been talked about and discussed quite a bit. Some love it. Others hate it. Some understand it fully. Others don’t get it. I’m not going to explain it all here because I’d prefer that readers draw their own conclusions. But I will make a few comments. First off, I don’t consider the ending to be a cliff hanger. Not even close. The story is very clear about what is going to happen next, and that is that Bobby will soon go to Solara and Courtney will not be far behind. To understand how the events described in the last chapter could have happened, you have to look at the end of the second to last chapter. Bobby lamented to Uncle Press that after all they had been through, it seemed unfair that the Travelers were not being allowed to live the normal lives they fought so hard for. All they wanted was a little bit of time to live those lives, which in the general scheme of Halla, wasn’t much . . . and Uncle Press agreed with him. How that was able to happen, and what all the implications are, I’ll leave that up to you to debate and decide.
I’ll say one other thing, and that’s about the guy who delivered Bobby’s journals to him in the hospital. Short of actually writing his name, I pretty much described exactly who it was. From the events that unfolded in the hospital room with Bobby and Courtney kissing and being interrupted, to his physical description, to Bobby recognizing him, to him saying that he had nine other journals to deliver, there is no other possible person that could have been…but Uncle Press.

This Book is AWESOME! I’ve read all 1-10 and the Traveler books 1-3! 🙂 (No I’m not a fan at all of your am I :)=:P )
Sean says:
Was i one of the few that understood that?
turquoise says:
Pendragon is still my all time favorite series, but I hated the ending (I did understand it though. 🙂 ). I’m a huge Bobby and Loor fan myself, so it was mainly Bobby being with who he ended up with…
But still… Amazing series! I cannot wait to read some of your other books!
Ashley says:
Thanks for posting this DJ. I think it took me a few minutes to understand the ending after I finished reading it. I guess there were a few people who still didn’t get it after a while, but this should really help them.
Hannah Joy Brown says:
I totally understood it, though I wasn’t completely happy with it. I would have liked to see Courtney and Mark together, but since the first nine books never happened, guess it makes more sense that they aren’t together. I got from the first second that it was Uncle Press, though. It’s kind of strange to think that after Bobby and Courtney got married, Courtney’s name is now Courtney Pendragon! It’s so strange. But I am a huge fan!
Chad says:
Mark Died ;(
Shelby says:
Epic ending to an epic series. Though I agree, I would have like to see Mark and Courtney together and Bobby and Loor together, this ending suited me just fine. I like to think that if Bobby hadn’t gotten his extra time, then Mark and Courtney would have ended up together.
Hannah Joy Brown says:
i agree with Shelby, i just said the same thing in too many words.
FireGirl20 says:
I understood it to! I mean in book 1 it says that his Uncle Press always dressed the same! : )
FireGirl20 says:
I mean “Uncle Press”.
gracie says:
Thanks for posting, DJ. I sort of figured all that, but it’s nice to hear it straight from the source.
I’m glad you didn’t think it was a cliffhanger, though I sort of find it weird that you claim it’s not and on the other hand say we should draw our own conclusions. I’ve been frustrated by other authors who expect their readers to fill in the ending for them, especially when the series starts out in a straightforward way like Pendragon did. I feel like the ending should be in tune with the beginning, and this one pretty much was…it just takes a little more effort on our part to figure out how it all hangs together.
minifig5844 says:
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved all the books, but the last one was the best.
P.S.
You guys should make movies of them:)
FireGirl20 says:
ya he said that he’s trying to make the movies but hes still asking directors/producers.
I LOVE PENDRAGON says:
I have to say that this is probably one of the best endings of any book that I have read, and I have read a lot of books. I am such a huge Pendragon fan it is not even funny. The ending was so touching that I cried. It summed it up perfectly and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.
Edward Worton N.J. says:
I could never figure it out until then. i always thought the guy was Gunny’s acolite. but apparently not
Sara says:
Omg, my favorite part so far is the “Loor Incident” at the end of The Rivers of Zadaa. It made me think “What?! That couldn’t happen! Oh, wow!” Best series ever!!!
Sara says:
Chad:
What!?!? Mark died?
Ellebear303 says:
Maybe I’m not the only one who thinks this series needs another story we need another adventure I don’t think this should be the end for Bobby Pendragon.
Arsenic says:
It would be cool, maybe not to see pendragon more. but like it might be cool to do an alternate series showing saint dane’s story. idk maybe that’s just me.
but I did love the ending to pendragon, it leaves room for a little bit of discussion based on the readers likes and dislikes, and who says that loor and pendragon can’t be together? they’re together forever on solara aren’t they? plus I don’t think courtney and bobby are going to be together on solara b/c it seems that bobby would be a different type of spirit.
sorry for the epic long post.
RS5 says:
This was an awesome series. I got the book having no idea that i was going to finish the whole series. Both my brothers have read the series, but by far I was the most interested. I thought the man at the end could have been either Uncle Press or Mark (I know he is dead, but he’s cheated death a couple times!) I didn’t get the ending until I looked it up a bit, but it was pretty epic. The one thing that kind of bummed me out was that Mark died at such a young-ish age. He was like one of my favorite supporting characters (Only surpassed by Vo Spader and Loor). This series was the best I have ever read, and thank you so much for writing it!!!
laithe says:
arsenic I had that same Idea also thought that maybe a series about uncle press
Cass says:
Thanks for posting this, DJ. This series is absolutely one of my favorites!!!!! I finished this series in less than two weeks!!
At first, i didn’t get the ending, but then i read it, and got it.I must say that the ending is good, but it isn’t the way i wanted it to end up. cant please everyone, right? my eyes started to water a little at the end, for one reason: Pendragon let me imagine a lot of things, and it lead me through a journey through time and space that’d i would never be able to experiance again, but it had come to a close. I seriously love re-reading these books because they never get old. Good writing, DJ! can’t wait for Morpheus Road!
Ellebear303 says:
A story about Uncle Press sounds good but a new generation of travelers sounds better but with Bobby going around and recruting them all or a sister series.
~Pickle~ (Shmii/Kayla) says:
I loved the ending. I think it was very well written, DJ. Hats off to you. 😀
I agree, this series is amazing. I keep saying that, and my friends are like, “Oh, it’s the Pendragon thing again.” I don’t even obsess about Harry Potter as much as I do Pendragon, and both series are officially over. (In terms of fanfics, no series or book is ever completed. :P)
I appreciate you posting this, though, because it’s always fun to hear from the author, and because it really does cement the theories I had. I always thought it was Press, but I knew it could have been someone else. I was sad that Mark died, but it’s the way it was meant to be. (lol) I never thought of it as a cliffhanger, rather conclusive ending, which is how books/series should end. Once again, I congratulate your writing. ^^ I can’t wait ’til Morpheus Road!
Swiffy says:
I totally understood this ending. I don’t know what’s so hard for everyone to understand, it made perfect sense to me. After thinking about it pretty hard, I’m pretty sure that there’s no possible way to create a “better” ending. It’s a great end. Bobby gets to relive his life, and so do all the others. It’s awesome.
Tristan Trahan says:
Wow. Never in eternity would I have guessed that Saint Dane won Veelox.( I could’ve swore he lost! ) I believe that Uncle Press should have been able to tell Bobby a little more about the travelers. But this series will never be forgotten.(I hope.) By far this was my favorite series of all.(I’ve read a lot of series.) This was truely an amazing, cosmically, awesome series.D.J. you are a genius.
Mewthree says:
Some people liked the ending, some people didn’t.
I didn’t really like the ending because it shows Bobby and Courtney as these really old people which was kinda weird as in the books, they were 14-19 years old.
But I got the point of it. And I don’t actually consider it as a cliff-hanger.
I hope you write other books like this because this was a really great read and eveyone loved it.
You probably won’t answer this but what happened/will happen to the Travellers/spirits in Solara?
Like, is it reincarnation or something. Anyway, I’ve sorta forgotten the first books so I’m gonna have to re-read them again!
Great series and I can’t wait for Morpheus Road:The light to come out. Incidently, how many books will there be in the Morpheus Road series.
Good luck,
~Mewthree
Mewthree says:
P.S. Cool new homepage, but I still have it saved on my favourites as “Pendragon-An adventure through time and space”. Oh well..I guess I’ll have to change it.
P.P.S. Sorry for the long post above!
~Pickle~ (Shmii/Kayla) says:
@Mewthree: Morpheus Road is a trilogy.
Ino says:
one of the best books ive ever read and im sad the series ended
Ezekiel says:
Pendragon is so awsome to bad the series ended.
At least his making a new series!
Becky says:
I have to say I hope the author is reading this because I cannot describe how wonderful his books were. With each book it only took me a few days to read becuase the excitment and anticipation was too much. Its sad that the series is over. I feel like Bobby and his friends are a part of me. It is also sad becuase the series was part of my life for years and now there is no new book to look foward to. I don’t think that I could have hoped for a better ending. I also love the closeness of the travlers and Mark and Courtney so I cried very much in the last chapter as they each returned to Solara. Especially with Spader and Gunny. I guess you could say im a big sap. I also cried at the very end from happiness and just the a little bit of meloncholy I guess. I like that you had to figure the end out. I guess all that can be said is all great things must come to an end. But what i’ll do without Bobby’s sarcasim i’ll never know.
PENDRAGON ROX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! says:
i loved the books. the pendragon series and harry potter are my favorites. my problem is that when a really good series ends, i get upset and wish it could continue. i know an author can’t make a series go on forever but still. after reading so many books about them, u feel like u know the characters and they’re real. when the series ends i feel really sad to see them go. by the way, i totally agree. they should definitely make movies about each book. they would be such a big hit. i wish i could make myself forget everything i read and read every book over and over again. dj if ur reading this ur books r great. i love bobbys sense of humor. it’s a little weird but saint dane was my second favorite character. (after bobby).
mike said that mike should say says:
This is the awesomest book series in all the galaxy…it dominates harry potter, twilight, rangers apprentice, and so many others!
benny says:
i honestly did not like the tenth book. 1-9 were all unreal but there were too many changes in the tenth book. (ex. solara, mark, no flumes, saint dane…etc).i would have liked bobby to see his parents at the end, rather than in the beggining…
bloop blop bloop says:
The ending is a lot to get your head around but all in all it was a good ending but i still have a few questions.
How did bobby(robert) just forget evrything about Halla, how could he not know that it was uncle press, and the hint about the journals you would think that he woud remember that. How could you forget somthing like that? im just wondering. I didint understand that part. It would be great is you could awnser my question but i know you are probly a busy man.
I love the series!!! 🙂 I totally agree with all the other fans we need a Pendragon movie!!! I also agree that you get so connected with the caracters and now the series is over i feel so lost. It is harry potter all over again.
Julia says:
I liked it cause it kinda was a comfort about what happen to all the travelers. I wish that Mark could have knowen what amazing things he did and i was sad when he died, but I am happy he did not know about the upsetting things he did. I wonder how Bobby reacted to all the information and if all the memories come back to him or he just beleved the story. I was happy that Courtney and Bobby got married and i wanted them to but i always wonder about Loor and Bobby. Over all i liked a lot and never expected it. The Pendragon books always had me guessing, not like most books, and I loved them. They made me happy, angry, fustrated, scream, laugh and giggle, and lots and lots and lots of decusions on the series or just life. Pendragon teach me lots of things.
saint dane says:
i love pendragon
saint dane says:
i Love pendragon books
FT9 says:
I loved the Pendragon series. I wonder if the other travelers also got to go back to their own territory, i mean worlds. I kinda figured it was Press Tilton who gave Bobby the journals.
It would be great if the Pendragon series continued, but now with Bobby’s adventures in Solara!
Marie says:
I thought it was him but thsi assured me. Your booksare really great and you should like totally make a movie over Pendragon.
James says:
I read the book twice and didnt get it till now though its still a bit confusinfg…
LeBon says:
I think DJ shouldnt make Pendragon into a movie. For two reasons:
R1: I think the actors wont play the characters like the characters in our head
R2: A lot of people would just want to watch the movie other than read. Books cover many small parts that movies dont cover
LeBon says:
I really wonder wonder who that guy was that gave Bobby his journals. He said he had to deliver 9 more more of those, so i think he is going to the Traveler. Which means they are probably in their home territories (worlds)!!
LeBon says:
Hehe. I didnt read the other posts. Sry. I supposed it was Dodger. But Press’s good too. Ironic to think Press is younger than Pendragon.
Stacey says:
I love these books! They’re great, and I’m sad to see them go (but i’m up to the 2nd book in the Travelers Series!!). I thought the ending was good. of course, I knew at once that it was Press, but, i mean, who didn’t? 😉
I was a little confused about how Bobby got to live a whole new life, but, I think i get how after bobby reads the journals, he’ll go back to Solara. Amazing books in general!!! I’ve got all my friends hooked!
LeBon says:
Lots of ppl didnt Stacey including me!
AMAZING says:
These books are amazing i wish they were in movies but DJ would have to make sure that they didn’t change anything because that’s the worst when it comes to movie interpretations. Anyway, amazing books and i hope this becomes a bigger phenomenon than harry potter because then it would be like in-your-face! but that’s just me. i like earlier people’s comments about how there should be a series from someone else’s point of view but i think mayb it should be a little like the Travelers Trilogy- that is, background info. Such as background on how Travelers got started in the world. Well, this is really long so I’d better stop. 🙂 thank you for a wonderful series, DJ!!!
Carrie says:
I LOVE! The Pendragon books!! You came to my old school once, you talked about it and I didn’t pay attention. I with I did cause then I would have been able to read then sooner!! Thank you!!
Becky says:
I loved all of your books! I am a 37 year old mother of 5 and I love discussing them with my teenage boys. Very well done! I thought the last chapter of Soldiers of Halla…wrapped up the series perfectly! You get an A+ here. Thanks!
