On the old forums I made a post about this, but since they no longer exist, I’ll write something again.
The final chapter of The Soldiers of Halla has been talked about and discussed quite a bit. Some love it. Others hate it. Some understand it fully. Others don’t get it. I’m not going to explain it all here because I’d prefer that readers draw their own conclusions. But I will make a few comments. First off, I don’t consider the ending to be a cliff hanger. Not even close. The story is very clear about what is going to happen next, and that is that Bobby will soon go to Solara and Courtney will not be far behind. To understand how the events described in the last chapter could have happened, you have to look at the end of the second to last chapter. Bobby lamented to Uncle Press that after all they had been through, it seemed unfair that the Travelers were not being allowed to live the normal lives they fought so hard for. All they wanted was a little bit of time to live those lives, which in the general scheme of Halla, wasn’t much . . . and Uncle Press agreed with him. How that was able to happen, and what all the implications are, I’ll leave that up to you to debate and decide.
I’ll say one other thing, and that’s about the guy who delivered Bobby’s journals to him in the hospital. Short of actually writing his name, I pretty much described exactly who it was. From the events that unfolded in the hospital room with Bobby and Courtney kissing and being interrupted, to his physical description, to Bobby recognizing him, to him saying that he had nine other journals to deliver, there is no other possible person that could have been…but Uncle Press.

Im on the Last bok of the Pendragon series. They are the best. Better than Harry Potter. Can not wait for Morpheus Road. I hope the character in the Morpheus is Spader. Or Press. But Spader is good!

First I would like to say I am a late bloomer. I have just finished reading the Pendragon series. I know its supposed to be my own interpretation, but I am very confused about the end of the story, and it has been my only thought for days. First, at Earth I suppose they somehow went back in time before the whole Ravinia incident, since the atmosphere/environment at the end of the story seems to be like that of the original second earth. Additionally, on the idea that Bobby and Loor should have got together, I think since Bobby married Courtney, I think Loor would have probably married Bokka (her best friend from Zadaa who she said herself was who she would have gone out with if had the chance). I guess my only question here is… HOW THE HECK DID BOBBY GET FROM A PLACE WHERE A WASTELAND WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE TAJ MAHAL TO A PLACE WHERE EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE FINE??? AND HOW DID MARK DIE SO YOUNG IF HE WAS SO FIT AT THIRD EARTH? Mr. Machale or fellow bloggers please relieve my stress and tell me your opinions. Thank you… and sorry for the long blog.

The only bad thing is that these books are so popular and so the library didn’t have any of the books in cuz they were all checked out. I ended up buying 8 outta the 10 books.

I think Kelvin, that Uncle Press created a diff timeline in which he gave bobby a chance to live how his life could have been if uncle press wouldnt have gotten him, so basically everything went back to normal…if uncle press never came that means saint dane never came which means none of the things which actually happened occured…this was done to show bobby how his life would have turned out to be…and mark died…well its just one of things that mr MacHale wrote…there is no link of him being fit on third earth to him dying on second earth….2nd timeline…well i hope this helps…..it took weeks of nighttime to figure it out lol…this is all acc to me..

So, I too was a bit late in reading the last book… I actually just finished about 30 min ago, but after reading the comments from others and DJM, I think the ending is quite simply understood. I don’t remember the exact wording but Bobby mentioned that a life in view of eternity is but a blip on the radar. Time travel, dark matter and all that other stuff aside, in the context of the story, would Solara not have the power to hit a proverbial reset button that lets the Travelers go back to that moment before they discovered their destiny, to live life the way it would have been. I mean, Elli and Gunny both had very long lives before they knew of the Travelers. SO, for any and every event that takes place in that alternate timeline, it would be affected by only that timeline, e.g. Mark dying. I will end with this, on the wikipedia page for the last book, someone posted the idea that after Bobby finishes reading the journals (and most likely the other Travelers too – Press said he had 9 others and to hurry and read the journals because there wasn’t much time) Solara will resume the timeline that left off in journal 37 and Bobby and the other Travelers will return to Solara. I think the ability is there, you just have to accept it.

Thanks guys. Sugandha, I was thinking the exact same thing, because numerous times throughout the epic, Pendragon wonders how his life would have been without Saint Dane/Uncle Press affair. This is how it would be, but I believe the giving of the journals is the indirect message that it is time for Bobby to die and come to Solara. I am not sure if you guys agree/disagree but let me know of your opinion.

good guess Kelvin but I think that Booby always knew he would go back someday but bringing back the journals was just a way for Uncle Press to take Bobby on one last adventure through the territories. bloggers give me an opinion on that.

Do you think its possible that after the whole Ravinia incident and all the power came back to Solara that the travelers + Uncle Press + Spirits used a ton of its power in order to rewind time back to the point of before Saint Dane, and while Saint Dane is still dead, and thats the end of the book. I am just throwing out ideas here. Let me know what you think.
